Types of Dentures

Drs. Ira ShapiraMark Amidei, and Richard Cottrell offer both traditional and snap-on (implant-supported) dentures with a range of customizable options to meet your needs and preferences. Whether you are a dissatisfied long-time denture wearer or a patient in need of extractions and full mouth reconstruction, our doctors are prepared to help you experience the comfort and confidence that an expertly crafted set of dentures can provide. We invite you to learn more about the types of dentures we provide at our Gurnee, IL, practice.

Traditional Dentures

Traditional dentures consist of an acrylic base that is tinted to mimic gum tissue and supports a set of replacement teeth. These dentures are shaped to achieve a precise fit with the ridge of your jaw. They are typically reinforced with a combination of a mild adhesive and suction. Each set of dentures we provide is carefully designed to correct the sunken, aged look that can occur when the jaws fail to meet properly due to missing teeth. You can expect that your dentures will position your lips and jaw in a way that projects an image of health and provides an attractive complement to your facial features.

Our dentists take care to ensure that each set of traditional dentures provides maximum comfort and function, but it is important to understand that this option cannot fully restore your ability to chew as implant-supported restorations can. Instead, traditional dentures require wearers to eat soft foods or foods that have been cut into very small pieces. Meanwhile, traditional dentures will require periodic adjustments to accommodate changes in the shape of your jaw. These changes are a natural result of the absence of tooth roots, and you can depend on our practice to provide adjustments as needed.

We may recommend traditional dentures if you are not a candidate for dental implants due to an autoimmune disorder, heavy tobacco use, or a severely compromised jaw. However, it may be possible to restore candidacy for snap-on dentures by taking measures to abstain from tobacco or by undergoing bone grafting surgery.

Snap-On Dentures

Dentures that snap onto dental implants provide a wealth of benefits that make them a popular choice among eligible patients. Drs. ShapiraAmidei, and Cottrell have undergone extensive training in dental implants and frequently use this treatment to help those in need of dentures to become able to eat any foods they choose and to enunciate with complete clarity. These dentures require little or no adjustments since dental implants stop the jaw atrophy that follows tooth loss.

We offer mini and All-on-4 implants that can often eliminate the need for bone grafting. These options can also support a denture immediately after they have been placed. We also offer traditional and ASTRA TECH Implant System™ EV implants. Although these options require several months of recovery before they can support a denture, they are highly durable. The ASTRA TECH Implant System™ EV was developed by Dr. Cottrell to provide several unique benefits. These advantages include ergonomically shaped top surfaces that accommodate moderate bone atrophy. This feature can also prevent atrophy of the uppermost bone tissue along the ridge of the jaw in ways that other implants cannot.
